HISTORY OF OKAPT
The Oklahoma Association for Pupil Transportation (OKAPT) traces its roots back to 1975, when a dedicated group of transportation professionals came together with a shared purpose: to improve the safety, efficiency, and professionalism of student transportation across the State of Oklahoma.
Originally established as the Oklahoma Association for Pupil Transportation (OAPT), the organization was founded to provide a network of support, training, and collaboration for school transportation personnel. What began as a small group of committed professionals has grown into Oklahoma's leading voice for pupil transportation, representing transportation directors, supervisors, trainers, mechanics, drivers, monitors, and industry partners from districts across the state.
For more than five decades, the association has remained focused on advancing student transportation through professional development, leadership opportunities, legislative awareness, safety initiatives, and industry partnerships. Through annual conferences, regional meetings, training programs, and networking events, generations of transportation professionals have worked together to share knowledge and strengthen school transportation operations throughout Oklahoma.
Over the years, the organization has adapted to meet the changing needs of the industry while maintaining its commitment to student safety and professional excellence. As technology, regulations, and transportation challenges have evolved, so too has the association's role in supporting those responsible for transporting Oklahoma's students each day.
In 2025, the association adopted the name Oklahoma Association for Pupil Transportation (OKAPT), reaffirming its commitment to serving the entire state while modernizing its identity for the future. The rebrand reflects both the organization's proud history and its vision for continued growth and innovation.
Today, OKAPT continues to unite transportation professionals from every corner of Oklahoma under a common mission: to promote safe, reliable, and effective transportation services for the students we serve.
As we celebrate more than 50 years of service, we honor the leaders, members, volunteers, and industry partners whose dedication has shaped our association. Their contributions have built a strong foundation that continues to guide OKAPT into the future.
While much has changed since 1975, our commitment remains the same: supporting the professionals who safely transport Oklahoma's future leaders every day.
