WHEN IS A CDL REQUIRED?

A CDL is required to operate any of the following vehicles:

  • Any-size vehicle that requires hazardous materials placards or is carrying other materials listed as a select agent or toxin...

  • Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

  • A combination vehicle with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

  • A vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.

Based on the requirements set forth by Service Oklahoma, operating a school bus requires a Class B CDL with the following endorsements: School Bus, Passenger, and Air Brakes (Optional). For more details on vehicles requiring a CDL, you can visit the Service Oklahoma website here.
