CLASSROOM TRAINING & MATERIALS
The classroom (theory) portion of CDL training provides the knowledge every school bus driver needs before operating a commercial motor vehicle. This instruction lays the foundation for safe driving practices, federal and state regulations, vehicle inspections, defensive driving techniques, passenger management, and the responsibilities associated with transporting students.
Federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations require new CDL applicants to successfully complete theory instruction before taking the CDL skills examination. In Oklahoma, school bus drivers must also complete training required by the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) to ensure they are prepared to safely transport students and meet all applicable licensing requirements.
OKAPT's CDL classroom curriculum has been approved by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and is designed to prepare prospective drivers for both the Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) knowledge examinations and the practical skills needed to become a safe, professional school bus operator.
CLASSROOM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
To successfully complete the classroom portion of CDL training, students must:
- Attend all required classroom instruction.
- Successfully complete each required training module.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the material through classroom assessments.
- Meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE), and Service Oklahoma training requirements.
- Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory requirements before attempting the CDL skills examination.
Completion of classroom instruction alone does not qualify an individual for a Commercial Driver License. Students must also complete behind-the-wheel training, pass all required knowledge and skills examinations, satisfy medical certification requirements, and meet all applicable federal and state licensing standards.

To protect the integrity of the training and examination process, testing materials-including test booklets, answer keys, and answer sheets-are not distributed directly to students or driver trainees.
