BEHIND THE WHEEL DRIVE TRAINING

Behind-the-wheel training is a critical component of the CDL process and prepares new drivers for both the CDL skills examination and the safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle. During this phase of training, drivers develop the practical knowledge and confidence needed to operate a school bus safely in a variety of driving conditions while demonstrating the skills required by state and federal standards.

Before an applicant is eligible to take the Oklahoma CDL skills examination, they must successfully complete the required behind-the-wheel training, including:

  • Mastering the Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection required during the CDL skills examination.
  • Practicing and demonstrating proficiency in Basic Vehicle Control Skills, including backing and maneuvering exercises.
  • Preparing for and completing On-Road Driving Training to develop safe driving habits and demonstrate proper vehicle operation in traffic.
  • Holding a valid Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) for a minimum of 14 days before taking the CDL skills examination. Applicants become eligible to test on the 15th day after their permit is issued.

Quality behind-the-wheel training not only prepares applicants to pass the CDL skills examination but also equips them with the skills necessary to safely transport Oklahoma's students each day.
